This is part 4 of 4 of our Colorado Road Trip. Click here for Part 1,Part 2 or Part 3.
Shortly after Four Corners, we headed back to Monument Valley to retake photos that we had lost. Since were coming at it from a different direction, we had to take the infamous Route 163! I stood in the middle of the road while husband kept an eye out for any oncoming vehicles. I bet you’ve seen photos like this one before:
It’s $5 per person to get into Monument Valley Navajo Tribal Park. To get a great view of all the monuments, there is a 17-mile dirt loop, which can get a bit hilly for some of the sedans we saw driving it at the pace of a snail.
This is a well-traveled loop. There are other roads that branch off from the loop but you can only access it via a guided tour (this includes Totem Pole & Yei Bi Chei).
On the way back home after Monument Valley, we passed by Elephant’s Feet. Elephant’s Feet is on my Arizona TO DO list, mind you, that list was created BEFORE moving to Arizona. If I had known it was in the middle of nowhere and was something that could be seen & satisfied in under 10 seconds… it wouldn’t have made it to that TO DO list.
With that said, I’m compelled (at the urging of my husband), to add a disclaimer about Elephant’s Feet:
Please don’t drive 5 hours JUST to see Elephant’s Feet!
Heck, we didn’t even stop for it! Husband just slowed down the jeep & I leaned out the window to get these photos:
On that high note…. that concludes our trip! Northern AZ / Southern CO trip!
In case you are curious, here info on the lovely lodge we at:
The Lodge at Tamarron is located between Silverton & Durango, situated ideally for us –close enough to great hiking, not too close to the Durango but not too far.
Dining & kitchenette included.
View from the room
Upstairs loft area
Hope you enjoyed the photos!
