Our final day of our road trip to San Diego ended on an exhilarating note with a kayak tour into the La Jolla Sea Caves.
I think the company we chose to tour with, HikeBikeKayak, made all the difference in whether we had a good time or a great time. We had a great time. They have a small group policy and guides that are well educated in the local wildlife and habitat.
In front of the HikeBikeKayak store. We highly recommend not wearing jeans on this tour.
Our excuse was that we are from a land-locked state and forgot what the ocean was like.
After signing in & getting our gear, we walked a very short distance to the beach, where the kayaks were waiting for us.
Quick run through on how to not kayak in circles (husband & I failed miserably at that, by the way).
Our newly engaged brother & his fiancé seemed to know what they were doing.
Let’s face it, he did all the work in the back… while I just splashed water on him.
This may be the cause of why we were going in circles…
Our excellent tour guide Kevin pointing out faults in the coast line, the cost of housing, gribald fishies, sea lions, kelp forests, the success with pelicans, etc.
It’s difficult to tell with my disposable, water-proof camera, but those are pelicans, seals, & sea lions on the rocks.
The head bobbing out of the water to the left is our tour guide Kevin, keeping an eye on an inquisitive sea lion.
This is where Kevin went above & beyond his guiding duties. Initially we weren’t going to go into the caves but as the waves settled down, he guided each of us in and out of the cave one at a time. And by guiding, I mean that he put on his flippers, got in the cold water, and pushed & swam behind each kayak into the cave. I can’t say our kayak was light after all the eating we’ve been doing either.
Inside the cave.
These photos were taken with a disposable, water-proof camera purchased from the tour company. I had initially intended to bring my DSLR camera –I’m glad they cautioned me not to!! There is no way my camera would have survived the water!
A couple things to note for this tour with HikeBikeKayak: 1) Parking for our Sunday 10:30 AM tour was not that difficult because it was early yet –I’ve read that during other times, parking is horrible. 2) Don’t bring a non-waterproof camera. 3) Wear swimming bottoms. There is no way to avoid a wet butt on this one. 4) Not everyone gets to go into the caves due to the weather. We were lucky.
And that concludes our mini roadtrip to San Diego!
