Have you ever stayed in a haunted hotel? We hadn’t until this weekend! Built in 1898, the Copper Queen Hotel is one of Arizona’s longest running hotels. Some guests there have been dead for years.
This hotel was featured on Ghost Hunters.
The main reason this hotel attracted us: Theodore Roosevelt stayed here. We stayed in the room named after him:
Our 26th president. America certainly doesn’t produce presidents like this one anymore.
Look at those glasses!
A claw footed, old fashioned tub. Either this tub is really old, or we had a ghost haunting the shower knobs. There is a little 8-9 year old ghost named Billy, known for playing pranks in the hotel. He died by drowning. When I showered, it was just fine. But when Husband took his turn, the hot water knob kept going up and down 3 times like an invisible hand was moving it. Ghostly pranks? Maybe. Old tub? Maybe that too.
We spent a good part of the evening exploring the hotel. It was very quaint with lots of historical artifacts, pictures and even had a somewhat creepy vibe but that could’ve been from the dimly lit rooms and hallways.
J.A. Jance room. She is a NY Times best selling author who grew up in Bisbee and usually mentions the Copper Queen Hotel in her books. I haven’t read any of her books but I will probably be picking one up soon.
This plant either swings at random moments or is haunted. I was standing a foot away from it taking pictures below when it started swinging. I didn’t bump it, there weren’t any vents near it and the window was closed so… we’re probably making something out of nothing.
Strolling the hallway.
John Wayne stayed here many times. Apparently so have a bunch of other celebrities like Johnny Depp, Julia Roberts, etc.
Wonder what that guy did….
Apparently Bisbee used to be a pretty large mining city. It’s considered a ghost town now.
Is that a ghost in the background?
We spent the bulk of our Bisbee stay exploring the town. It’s probably one of the most uniquely built town we’ve visited considering everything is much built into steep hills. There is a 4 story school where you can enter each floor at ground level. We explored the stores for political memorabilia and tea cups with English scenes. Can you tell who searched for what?
Jesus Christ lamp anyone?
We explored the History Museum as well:
“Hello? Operator? Someone’s urinating in the shower room!”
This weekend was very relaxing. Unlike most of our adventures, we did this one at a very leisurely pace. I was expecting it to be a little more creepy than it actually was but it wasn’t. I was actually somewhat dreading the stay… despite my fascination with paranormal tv shows…. I’d rather not have to experience any significant ghostly encounters.
The Copper Queen Hotel, and the entire town, is very quaint, charming and definitely makes one appreciate not having to live in the early 1900′s.
