In the early 1900′s, Mary Colter worked as one of the few women architects in a then male-dominated field. She is now often referred to as the architect of the southwest. She is responsible for several structures in the Grand Canyon, but her signature piece is the Watchtower at Desert View.

This weekend, I kind of kidnapped husband for a mini getaway to the Grand Canyon. It was just what we needed –a chance to relax & see new sights!
Saturday’s first stop was at Bearizona Wildlife Park in Williams, which had been on my our Arizona To Do list for some time.

I can’t believe after years of residing in southern Arizona, we’ve only recently ventured into Chiricahua National Monument, a sky island (“. . . mountain island in a desert sea”) near Willcox filled with hundreds of towering hoodoos.

With the temperature hitting a constant 110°F/43°C this summer (pretty normal for Arizona summers), we had a somewhat spur of the moment mini-weekend getaway to the much cooler White Mountains. We wanted to see trees! Grass! Water! So it was off to Pinetop-Lakeside for us!
